I think that it was a significant event because Cathy freeman was an aboriginal that had won for Australia. Also she carried both aboriginal and Australian flag and she acknowledged the true owners of Australia

I think it was subnificant for Australia because about 2-300 years ago when the British came in we were all enemies but on that night the nations were in harmony cheering for Cathy.
