You have been asked to create a public awareness ad campaign to debunk some of the myths surrounding asylum seekers. 

Your brief is to:

1.  Create a visual campaign to be used on television, the internet or in cinemas. The ad should be no longer that 45 seconds and no shorter than 30 seconds. It should contain text, pictures and audio. 

2. Create a poster that draws attention to the TRUTH and busts the MYTH.

3. Write a 300 word overview (report) of your campaign that outlines some of the myths you have uncovered and explains WHY they are myths.


  • You are first required to DEFINE the word MYTH. What is the word's original meaning? What does the word mean in the context of MYTHBUSTING?  Record (write)  your answer in an app of your choice.
  • WATCH this episode of MYTHBUSTERS.  What is the myth they are busting? What did they do to bust the myth? What is the REALITY? Record all your answers.
  • Open these documents in NOTABILITY. Read them and highlight key points. Use these facts as the basis for your campaign.

  • Your ANALYSIS of the MYTHBUSTERS episode
  • Your advertisement
  • Your POSTER
  • Your 300 word report

Some outstanding work was on display this week.  Our Novel Study work was presented in a variety of imaginative and creative ways. Lots of clever digital samples, artistic responses, dioramas - the works. We read a WIDE variety of novels from The Hobbit to The Naughtiest girl is a Monitor! Authors like Bryce Courtenay, Rick Riordan and John Marsden were all represented showing the diverse reading tastes in 6W. Congratulations everyone for your fantastic efforts! Medecins Sans Frontières (Doctors Without Borders)


Right now life threatening diseases and disasters are taking a terrible toll, affecting people of all ages in communities the world over. And we are there helping victims of war, treating people with cholera, fighting acute malnutrition, and providing crucial vaccinations against disease. Week 5 Blog Task

Choose a Non Government Organisation (an international aid organisation) to research. Select one that provides aid to people through supporting an aspect of the Millennium Goals we have been learning about. 

Write a report about your organisation that includes:

1.   The history of your organisation. 
2.   Why it was established.
3.   What it does. 
4.   Who it helps.
5.   The countries in which it is most active.
6.   Examples of some current projects.

Your report should include maps, pictures (captioned and acknowledged)

Dont forget to include a bibliography.

The week began with us beginning to record our '6W Global News' stories. We set the green screen up and began filming using some of the auto cue apps we'd discovered last term. There were many global events to choose from including of course,  Hurricane Sandy. On Wednesday we travelled to Murwillumbah to see 'I am Eleven' at the terrific Regent Theatre. It was a fantastic documentary that really opening our eyes to what we have in common with with kids our age throughout the world. The movie also highlighted some key differences and we continue to discuss those in class as part of our Global Issues unit. We had another great day again on Thursday for our second last surfing lesson! It was another great week in 6W!

This week we investigated the idea of PARODY in artworks. We studied the iconic American artwork,  Grant Wood's 'American Gothic'. This oil painting was painted in 1930 and is now a very familiar piece of 20th Century American art.

We used a variety of techniques to produce versions of our American Gothic pictures. We drew the picture first using lead pencil on art paper. We are in the process of applying water colour paints. We are also creating a digital version of the picture using a number of apps. Take a look at Sophie's and Blake's  works in progress:

Another Surfing Movie.........

On Wednesday October 31st we'll be travelling to the Regent Theatre in Murwillumbah to see the award-winning documentary film, 'I Am Eleven'. It features a number of 11 year olds from around the world and will fit perfectly with our Global Connections unit. To find out some more about the movie, click here.

Before Monday, interview at least three adults about what they remember or liked about being 11 years-old. Record their responses on paper or record your interview and create a short movie ready to share with the class on Monday.
